Introduction
Human Resources Management plays different
roles in an organization as recruitment, motivation, training and retention,
employee relations etc. Talent management is one of the main roles that HR has to play
in an organization which is the systematic attraction, identification, development,
engagement, retention and deployment of employees in the right job roles. This
article will take an in-depth look at the subject of Talent Management.
What is Talent Management?
Talent management is defined as the methodically organized, strategic process of getting the right talent on board and helping them grow to their optimal capabilities keeping organizational objectives in mind.
The process thus involves identifying talent gaps and vacant positions, sourcing and onboarding the suitable candidates, growing them within the system and developing needed skills, training for expertise with a future focus and effectively engaging, retaining and motivating them to achieve long-term business goals. The definition brings to light the overarching nature of talent management – how it permeates all aspects pertaining to the human resources at work while ensuring that the organization attains its objectives. It is thus the process of getting the right people on board and enabling them to enable the business at large.
Under the umbrella of talent management, there are a string of elements and sub-processes that need to work in unison to ensure the success of the organization. For example, analyzing the right talent gaps for the present and the future, identifying the right talent pools and best-fit candidates, getting them to join and then optimizing their existing skills and strengths while helping them grow are touch-points that are all equally important. They support each other and the whole structure would crumble even if one sub-process fell out of sync.
Why it is important?
1. It helps the organization to improve its performance – when the organization has talented people, it is easy to communicate the organizational goals and get help from the employees to make it a success.
2. It helps organizations to stay competitive
- by hiring the right candidate for the right task help the organization to become
stronger and better prepared for the challenges to come
3. It drives innovations – An organization
should be always ready for new innovations and developments. Talented employees
are able to help organization to come up with new developments and trends that
suits the market need.
4. It decreases turnover – When the
employee feels valued at the organization and also if he or she has plenty of opportunities
to move up in the career ladder, employees are less likely to move to another organization.
5. It leads to strong employer branding –
Talent management help your organization to build the brand as an employer. Employees
like to work for an organization that develops them. This helps the organization
to attract the best candidates for future hires.
6. It motivates others to grow – Having
inspiring employees who have developed themselves through the organization will
motivate other employees to grow.
What a talent management strategy should include?
Talent management strategy can be differentiated from organization to another organization. It has to change according to the vision, mission and goals of the organization and where the organization likes to position itself in the future. The strategy includes five steps. The article posted by Valamis.com explains it as below.
2.
Attracting - It is not always as simple as when one person leaves the company,
you start a search for someone else to fill the role. For instance, your
needs may change or employees may take on new responsibilities. Talent
management ensures that you always have sufficient staff to carry out all your
operations and prevent heavy workloads that could cause demotivation. The
right strategy will attract just the kind of workers you want at your business.
Such hires will be driven, skilled, and seeking to advance within the company.
Attracting talent is all about branding your company as an employer. You’ll
need to find ways to increase visibility in ways that allow you to present the company as the best place to work. The main consideration here is to make your
business more approachable. Even if you choose not to hire someone for a
particular position, you still need to create a positive experience. This will
give you the opportunity to hire these candidates for other jobs or use them as
ambassadors to acquire other talent.
3.
Developing - The development part of the model involves taking steps to help
talent grow within the company. It should be aligned with the
employee development plan and includes identifying roles where
particular employees could move to in the future as well as considering how to
expand workers’ skills and knowledge to fulfill new challenges facing your
organization. Talent management also looks at what will keep employees
at your company enthusiastic and willing to go the extra mile. It is necessary
to provide employees with value. Motivation also requires the correct
onboarding — to give new hires a great impression of your company from the very
beginning. This will increase the chance that they stay with the company and
work hard.
4. Retaining
- Another purpose of talent management is to keep people at your
company for longer. Employees need to continue feeling that the company
is an enjoyable, meaningful place to work. Through training and other
types of engagement, employees have the chance to create a career without
leaving the company. You may achieve this by focusing on compensation (monetary
and otherwise) as well as company culture.
5.
Transitioning- After hiring and dev
eloping their skills, you need to plan for
employees’ transitions.
Conclusion
Talent Management is an integrated part of
the Human Resource Management. Managing the talents of your employees and
helping them to boost their talents help the organization to perform better and
retain talented employees. However, every talent management strategy should
be unique in accordance with the organization policies, vision and goals and
proper planning and execution of a talent management process will help the organization, in the long run, to build a brand for itself.
